We are like birds in the same forest, and when our last moment comes, we go our separate ways according to our own karma. If you truly love your children, wish your family to be good, and want to be free from the suffering of being apart from your loved ones, you should seize the chance to give them wise advice while you are still affectionate to each other. You should tell them, “Believe in and learn Buddhism, and diligently chant the Buddha’s name so that we can be reborn in the Western Pure Land together in the future.”

How do we sincerely recite the Buddha’s name?
The mouth must chant distinctly,
the ears must listen attentively,
and the mind must remember clearly.
Like so, from the very first recitation
to the ten-thousandth recitation,
from the first day of the retreat to the seventh,
and so on for the duration of one’s life.

Why is it that the more you chant the name of the Buddha, the more afflicted you become? It is because you are not truly chanting from your heart. You are still following your secular sentiments, so of course you will experience more afflictions. Please rid yourself of these secular sentiments, and chant the Buddha’s name with a repentant mind. If you keep this up and thereby eradicate your secular attachments, you will gain unspeakable joy.

I hope that everyone will continue to chant the Buddha’s name, especially during such times of chaos in the world and unrest in people’s minds. Our practice will bring peace of mind to all people, and nurture our roots of compassion.

Buddha Recitation requires faith and resolve, and that we believe in what Shakyamuni Buddha told us. We need to believe that Amitabha Buddha and the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss do exist. As long as we chant the Buddha’s name, there will be a lotus flower for us in the Water of Eight Meritorious Virtues. At the time of our death, Amitabha Buddha, Guan Yin Bodhisattva, and Mahastamaprapta Bodhisattva will come with our lotus flower and guide us to the Pure Land.

The Buddha has infinite auspicious characteristics. Each characteristic has infinite marks and each mark emits infinite light. Each light shines upon sentient beings that practice Buddha Recitation. As long as you recite the Buddha’s name, your formless mind will connect with the Buddha’s pure mind. Once you rediscover your pure formless mind, you will be complete in all meritorious virtues.

Earnestly reciting the Buddha’s name eradicates delusional thoughts. If your mind is not focused, it will drift along with delusional thoughts, similar to how duckweed is easily moved by the flow of water.

The level of your Buddha Recitation determines where you will be reborn in the Western Pure Land. If you achieve single-mindedness in the practice of chanting the Buddha’s name, you will go to the Land of Expedient Liberation. If you attain single-mindedness of understanding, you will go to the Land Adorned with Real Rewards. Buddhas dwell in the Land of Perpetual Peace and Light. If you are firm in your faith, but have not attained single-mindedness, you will go to the Common Residence Land shared by sages and ordinary people. So, as long as your belief is firm enough and you chant the Buddha’s name with utmost sincerity, rebirth in the Pure Land is guaranteed. Attaining single-mindedness is not a prerequisite for rebirth there.
