Buddhist teachings are methods to end the cycle of birth and death; they are the fundamental ways to relieve all suffering and difficulty. How do we end the cycle of birth and death? It is not enough to take the lay precepts. However, taking the lay precepts is the first step toward taking the monastic precepts. To realize Buddhahood, we cannot leave out this first step! The rich should nourish their body with virtues. Being virtuous is a basic requirement. When one does not build a solid foundation in cultivating virtues but instead only pays attention to the trivialities of decorating one’s house and one’s body, how misguided it is!

Pay attention to the word ‘precept’. It means both ending and upholding. Ending means putting an end to all unwholesome deeds. Upholding means maintaining and holding to.

Be vegetarian to avoid incurring the debt of life
Beware that the Chinese character for ‘meat’ contains two ‘human’ characters stacked on top of each other. You might be eating an animal now, but you must endure the consequences in the future. If you don’t eat them, you will not have created this negative cause. You do not need to repay the debt if you don’t incur it.

We see waves on the sea because wind blows on it. Without wind, there are no waves.
If we can get rid of the wind of ignorance, we can resume the true nature of no substance.
With pure mind and right conduct, we can perfect our blessings and wisdom and attain Buddhahood.
