Breaking the precepts of killing and stealing will not only make others suffer and the world not be in peace, but you will also suffer. In fact, although those whom you offend also suffer, the one who will suffer the most is you yourself, as you have to bear the retribution of killing and stealing. If one person practices Buddhism, that person will enjoy peacefulness; if everyone can practice Buddhism, the world will be at peace.

“Amitabha” is also Sanskrit, meaning “infinite light and infinite life.” Amitabha Buddha’s sacred name embodies the virtues of infinite light and infinite life. It originates from his great compassionate cultivation of blessings, wisdom, the Four All-Embracing Virtues, and Six Paramitas over innumerable billions of kalpas.

How do we keep evil spirits and ghosts at bay?
If you regularly play audio recordings of Buddha name recitation at home, the Buddha’s light will shine and evil spirits and ghosts will not approach. Even the upright and impartial King Yama (Ruler of the hells) would not approach you either. In his righteousness, he would prefer you going to see Amitabha Buddha instead.

When you first start your practice, you have to concentrate on reciting Amitabha Buddha's sacred name; this is using what is pure to triumph over defilement. If you do not practice like this, how can you remove your secular attachments and deluded thoughts? By the meritorious virtues of this sacred name, you can remove the karma of past offenses from the infinite past, and thoroughly cleanse yourself of afflictions and attachments. This is because all of these karmic offenses, afflictions and deluded thoughts are unreal. What a pity that mundane people are lost in these unreal afflictions and never find their way to enlightenment!

The single-mindedness referred to in The Commentaries on the Amitabha Sutra refers to single-mindedness in practice and understanding. Nevertheless, there is also the single-mindedness of ordinary people. This refers to your utmost sincerity and sense of remorse. When you break the precepts, you repent, and with a sense of remorse, bring forth utmost sincerity to chant the Buddha’s name. If you can do that, you will definitely be reborn in the Western Pure Land.

When we recite the Flower Adornment sutra, it is most important that we expand the capacity of our minds. Let go of the notions of ‘me and mine’. Open up our minds to be in complete harmony with the minds of all Buddhas of the Ten Directions.

If a tiger wanted to eat you, would you be willing to be eaten? If a bad person wanted to kill you, would you happily be killed? “Do not do to others what you would not wish for yourself.” See things through other beings’ eyes—if you would not be willing, then do not carelessly take other lives; do not eat meat anymore.
