In order to have a pure mind, you must first work on the karma of your body and mouth. Some might say, “It is good enough for a person to have a good heart.” Of course you must have a good heart, but what kind of action can show that? Your good deeds are evidence of your good heart. If you do not pay attention to the karma of your mouth, do not do good deeds and instead do bad deeds, how can you lie that you have a good heart?

In fact, you must not consume anything that is harmful to your body. This is why Buddhism teaches you to quit drinking and smoking. There is a saying that “all diseases enter through the mouth and all disasters come out of the mouth.” Not only should we not harm sentient beings, but we also must not consume anything that is harmful to our body such as tobacco and alcohol.

Within our essential nature, there are originally no such things as karmic obstacles. When the wind of delusive thoughts is stirred up, these thoughts cause us to do various deviant actions which become our karmic obstacles.

Meat contains toxins; do not crave it
Many scientists have long known that when animals are about to be killed, their extreme fear and anger causes toxins to be released in their blood, which will instantly harm any human being who eats their meat.

A daughter-in-law should tell herself, “My mother-in-law raised my husband and entrusted him to me. I should be thankful and respect her as if she were my own mother.” Similarly, a mother-in-law should also recognize, “My daughter-in-law’s parents put a lot of effort into raising and educating her. Now that she is part of my family and helps to look after my son, I must be grateful to her and love her as my own daughter.” Mutual gratitude is the key to maintaining a harmonious relationship.

In Buddhism, it is said, “Prajna wisdom is our mother; expediency is our father.” Prajna wisdom is like the ocean that contains all Buddhadharma. How can one methodically take the treasures that are deep within this ocean, and make them fully available to all sentient beings in order to benefit them? Some form of expediency is required.

When others point out your faults, don’t argue. The more you do, the less they will respect you!
Instead, you should admit your faults and thank them for pointing it out. If you admit your mistakes, others will see that you can accept criticism and may even offer you advice.

Do you know you are creating the karma of killing with each meal?
If you eat the meat of sentient beings at every meal, you are incurring debts and creating negative karma with every meal—how could you possibly not suffer the retributions? Please save sentient beings from suffering in order to enjoy peace and happiness yourself.

In the Buddhist perspective, forbearance is to be “unmoved by the Eight Winds.” The Eight Winds are praise, ridicule, suffering, happiness, benefits, loss, disgrace, and honor. Buddhism teaches us to remain unperturbed whether we are faced with favorable conditions, adversities, disgrace or flattery.
