One would do well to see oneself as ordinary and everyone else as Bodhisattvas.

From the timeless traditions of the auspicious
seventh lunar month, we know,
That among the four kinds of gratitude, the one towards one's parents is foremost.
Maudgalyayana once asked for guidance, and the
Buddha compassionately revealed,
The method for delivering his mother from the
endless suffering endured since time immemorial.
Ultimately, the salvation came from the power of the Sangha members assembled,
Along with the prouidence of those with the Three Disciplines and No Outflows.
With these words, I urge the Buddhists of the Ten Directions,
To protect the proper Dharma so it can be shared with all future generations.

Great Bodhisattvas make great determinations; I hope that we will make small determinations. Do not feel embarrassed; large airplanes and ships cannot be missing a tiny screw. Don’t say that you do not have a lot of money. Your sincere contribution yields inconceivable merits! I hope that everyone will do what they can in this.

When you take the precepts, you need to be vigorous and brave in your resolve! Grit your teeth. Even if your teeth are knocked out, be prepared to swallow the blood and keep going. Courage is needed in order to accept these rules. If you can follow the rules well, then you can uphold the precepts well; this is for certain. It is just like building a house: if the foundation is not laid out well, how will you construct a high-rise building? If you do not learn to follow the rules, how will you be able to receive the precepts? And if you do not uphold the precepts well, how will you be able to end the cycle of birth and death, and realize Buddhahood? This is a Buddha-selecting factory, and a place of cultivation for diligent Bodhisattvas. It is not a place to come and be lazy. If you were lazy, how would you make the resolve to come here and take the precepts?

As to the effects of chanting the Buddha’s name, in fact each and every chant is responsive! Eliminating karmic hindrances is an extraordinarily great response. Once our karmic hindrances are eliminated, we will be liberated from our suffering; that is the great compassion of the Bodhisattvas. When we are free of suffering, we will immediately feel ease and happiness; that is the loving-kindness of the Buddha.
