Secular knowledge is the dharma with (karmic) outflows; Secular knowledge has (karmic) outflows and is impermanent. On the other hand, by simply hearing one verse of the Buddhadharma, you will have planted an everlasting diamond seed of Buddhahood. The Buddhadharma is like a diamond seed; even if you hear only one single sentence, if you immediately put it into practice with sincerity, you will benefit according to the amount of effort you put in. Your hard work will certainly be rewarded.

Are you friends with King Yama?
Before you heard the Buddhadharma, you were lost in a life of ignorance and indulgence. Now that you have heard the Buddhadharma, you still consider worldly affairs as your top priority, while relegating the Buddhadharma to a secondary place or even to the bottom of the list. You must be a good friend of King Yama! Without first accomplishing your Buddhist practice, you have no way of dealing with King Yama. Are you not scared of falling into and suffering in the Three Lower Paths? Are you really so reckless? If you want to be liberated, you must practice diligently and stop being lazy!

How does the Buddhadharma teach us to improve our actions and speech? Cultivation is not that difficult; everyone can do it. It all depends on our willingness to practice. If we are willing to put in the effort, we will definitely be able to do it. Not only that, we will also do it well. How do we do it well? We must practice the Five Virtues: virtues of benevolence, integrity, propriety, wisdom, and trustworthiness. In Buddhism, we call them the Five Precepts: no killing, no stealing, no sexual misconduct, no lying, and no use of intoxicants.

Just like walking, this process has to be taken step by step. If you miss one step, you have not mastered it. This is especially true when Buddha-Dharma emphasizes that “all things emerge from conditions.” When the right conditions are there, you will have the results. Otherwise, all your energy, effort, and time spent will be in vain.

The reason you may find some concepts difficult as you study the Buddhadharma is because your true wisdom is obstructed by secular sentiments. As long as you diligently chant the Buddha’s name, prostrate to Guan Yin Bodhisattva, and let go of worldly desires and wandering thoughts, your mind will be tranquil, and your wisdom will naturally shine through. When you resume your studies, all concepts will become easily comprehensible.
