The Buddha is the enlightened one; if we follow the path of Buddhahood, we will have the wisdom to not do foolish deeds. We will become happy and make everyone happy as well. Being foolish harms us, and it harms others. It does not do justice to the value of our human life.

Do not insist that chickens, ducks, fish, and pigs are born to be eaten by human beings. This is bullying! You should know that even if the creatures you are eating are not your relatives from past lives, they are all Buddhas of the future. They all have the Buddha Nature; it is just that they created negative karma and fell into the animal realm. When their retribution is over and they cultivate the Buddha Way, they will certainly realize Buddhahood in the future.

When applying this to chanting the Buddha’s name, the level of inner peace attained depends on our effort. We must chant the Buddha’s name even more, as our grave karmic obstructions accumulated over many past lives are like a chronic illness that cannot be cured with only one or two treatments. Attaining Buddhahood requires persistence and effort.

Facilitate the temple construction with utmost sincerity
We can cultivate with our mouths; we can also cultivate with our minds. The Buddhadharma states that everything originates from the mind. You might not have the physical strength or monetary wealth, and you might not have time to cultivate, but you are able to contribute mental effort. Mental effort is the true source which will facilitate all causes and conditions; as long as you bring forth genuine, utmost sincerity, you will succeed. Realizing Buddhahood depends on making a single determination with utmost sincerity. You might think that realizing Buddhahood is the most difficult. If one single determination, made with utmost sincerity, can lead to the realization of Buddhahood, it is certainly possible to accomplish a monastery by making a single determination with utmost sincerity as well.

The greatest form of merit is gained by chanting the Buddha’s name to be reborn in the Western Pure Land. Once there, we will attain the Stage of Non-Arising, realize Buddhahood, and guide sentient beings. This is the greatest, most sacred wish to have. Giving up on this wish is both ignorant and pitiable.

When you take the precepts, you need to be vigorous and brave in your resolve! Grit your teeth. Even if your teeth are knocked out, be prepared to swallow the blood and keep going. Courage is needed in order to accept these rules. If you can follow the rules well, then you can uphold the precepts well; this is for certain. It is just like building a house: if the foundation is not laid out well, how will you construct a high-rise building? If you do not learn to follow the rules, how will you be able to receive the precepts? And if you do not uphold the precepts well, how will you be able to end the cycle of birth and death, and realize Buddhahood? This is a Buddha-selecting factory, and a place of cultivation for diligent Bodhisattvas. It is not a place to come and be lazy. If you were lazy, how would you make the resolve to come here and take the precepts?
