The word "Buddha" means “the awakened one." When we chant the name of the Buddha, we must be in an awakened state of mind at all times, using our mind to chant in every moment, hearing each recitation distinctly, and letting our mind dwell on this sacred name.

Why should we seek out opportunities to serve others?
This is how we can eradicate our past karmic offences stemming from our arrogance and slighting of others. It is also an avenue for us to repay the karmic debt accumulated in past lifetimes due to our ignorance—not fulfilling our obligations, only indulging in pleasures and fighting for our own gain. Due to these past transgressions, we lack both blessings and wisdom in this lifetime and encounter many difficulties in life. That is why we should seek out opportunities to serve others, as doing so gives us a chance to cultivate our own blessings and wisdom.
