A daughter-in-law should tell herself, “My mother-in-law raised my husband and entrusted him to me. I should be thankful and respect her as if she were my own mother.” Similarly, a mother-in-law should also recognize, “My daughter-in-law’s parents put a lot of effort into raising and educating her. Now that she is part of my family and helps to look after my son, I must be grateful to her and love her as my own daughter.” Mutual gratitude is the key to maintaining a harmonious relationship.

In Buddhism, it is said, “Prajna wisdom is our mother; expediency is our father.” Prajna wisdom is like the ocean that contains all Buddhadharma. How can one methodically take the treasures that are deep within this ocean, and make them fully available to all sentient beings in order to benefit them? Some form of expediency is required.

When others point out your faults, don’t argue. The more you do, the less they will respect you!
Instead, you should admit your faults and thank them for pointing it out. If you admit your mistakes, others will see that you can accept criticism and may even offer you advice.

Do you know you are creating the karma of killing with each meal?
If you eat the meat of sentient beings at every meal, you are incurring debts and creating negative karma with every meal—how could you possibly not suffer the retributions? Please save sentient beings from suffering in order to enjoy peace and happiness yourself.

In the Buddhist perspective, forbearance is to be “unmoved by the Eight Winds.” The Eight Winds are praise, ridicule, suffering, happiness, benefits, loss, disgrace, and honor. Buddhism teaches us to remain unperturbed whether we are faced with favorable conditions, adversities, disgrace or flattery.

Buddhism talks about the Law of Cause and Effect, which spans the Three Periods (past, present, and future). Suppose in your previous lives you frequently heard the Dharma; practiced diligently; planted deep virtuous roots; and cultivated a lot of blessings. Even if you have not encountered the Dharma in this life, or were born in a place without Buddhism, due to your profound virtuous roots, you will naturally not be swayed into committing an evil action despite coming across negative conditions.

What are the Six Paramitas? They are: giving, observance of precepts, forbearance, diligence, meditative concentration, and wisdom. These six meritorious virtues can liberate sentient beings from the Six Hindrances: greed, violation of precepts, anger, laziness, scattered thoughts, and ignorance.
We must use the Six Paramitas to eradicate the Six Hindrances.

Lighting up the lamps Creates infinite light
When we hang the lanterns up all around the temple, the whole place seems to become a world of light. Many people praise it when they see it for the first time, saying, “Wow! I have never seen anything like the sea of light at Lingyen Mountain Temple!” All of you have contributed to this world of light. When you cultivate this cause, you will enjoy the reward of infinite light in the future. Don’t just rely on Amitabha Buddha’s infinite light. You have to personally cultivate the cause in order to enjoy the reward.

Not arguing with those who make accusations against us liberates us from conflict. The more you argue, the worse it gets. Those who are unhappy with, or resent you may have been wronged by you in previous lives, creating negative karmic ties. When you meet in this lifetime, whether or not you are at fault, they will insult or slander you.
