If there is anything I would like you to learn from my life experience, it is to be grounded in humility and fulfill the responsibilities of your role.

Prostrating to the Buddha is the best exercise! At the beginning, prostrate twelve times every day—representing the twelve great vows of Guan Yin Bodhisattva.

Learn to free people from suffering and give them happiness just like Guan Yin Bodhisattva does.
You chant Guan Yin Bodhisattva’s name, and I wish that you will also learn to be like Guan Yin Bodhisattva! Before becoming a Bodhisattva, Guan Yin was an ordinary being, too. How did he accomplish his cultivation? He started by being compassionate, freeing others from suffering and giving them happiness. Since you cannot yet be as greatly compassionate as a Bodhisattva, you can start by practicing compassion little by little. Gradually, when you perfect your cultivation, you can be like the Bodhisattva.

Many people think that chanting the name of Amitabha Buddha will lead them to the Western Pure Land but that chanting the name of Guan Yin Bodhisattva won’t do it. They also think that chanting the name of Guan Yin Bodhisattva can save them from hardships, but that chanting the name of Amitabha Buddha won’t do it. This is wrong! All Buddhas and Bodhisattvas have the compassion and the power to help sentient beings fulfill their wishes! Just give your utmost sincerity and you will be able to receive a response.

As Buddhist practitioners, and as monastic practitioners, there is no negotiating when it comes to the precepts. For every ounce of effort that you put into upholding the precepts, you will generate an ounce of beneficial value. For every part that you do not uphold, you will experience one part of suffering.

In your Bodhisattva practice, if you already have the intention to seek transcendence, and have given rise to the mind of great compassion, you also need to practice contemplation of emptiness.

We know that certain deeds should not be done, but we go ahead and do them anyway due to negative karma. We must chant Guan Yin Bodhisattva’s name more diligently and pray to her for help in eradicating our ignorance and in uncovering our wisdom. When we have wisdom, we will do good deeds, no longer creating bad karma.

There is a saying, “Husband and wife are like two birds in a forest. They go their separate ways when their last day comes.” So where will they go? People who do not practice Buddhadharma will be trapped in the Six Paths and will travel back and forth on these paths ceaselessly according to their karma. They might even fly into the hells of sword mountains and blade trees. As a matter of fact, we are all “birds in the same forest.” Do not wait till the time comes. We should always make haste and be prepared for death.
