The real way to liberate living beings is to be vegetarian
Even though it is good to liberate living beings, it is even better to be vegetarian. To be vegetarian is to be truly compassionate, and truly liberate lives. If you liberate living beings but continue eating meat, then how many lives can you actually liberate in your lifetime? You could not liberate as many as you eat!

The Avatamsaka Syllabary begins with the syllable ‘a’. By adding different syllables after it, we give it different meanings. All phenomena originate from this one syllable ‘a’, and ultimately return to the syllable ‘a’. The syllable ‘a’ gives rise to all of the myriad phenomena. It represents our essential nature, our original pure mind.

In your Bodhisattva practice, if you already have the intention to seek transcendence, and have given rise to the mind of great compassion, you also need to practice contemplation of emptiness. This relates to the part of the syllabary where we recite, “with the universal vow that all sentient beings enter the prajna paramita door.”

Adding different syllables behind ‘a’ to form various combinations changes its effect. From this we can see that all phenomena work in the same way. Different arrangements produce changes, but they do not change its essence. All phenomena arise interdependently from the syllable ‘a’, and finally return to the syllable ‘a’.

Did you know that having a smile on your face could solve most of your problems?
Generally speaking, have you noticed that people will not fight with you when you have a smile on your face? If someone appears angry and tries to hit you, just smile and apologize. Say, “I’m sorry. It’s my fault!” Even the biggest dispute can be resolved that way.
