As Buddhist disciples, apart from respecting your parents and raising your children, you should also make offerings to the Three Treasures and contribute to temple construction. By doing so, you will help countless sentient beings end the cycle of birth and death, and ultimately realize Buddhahood.

What is the Buddha Way? What is the secular way? When we violate the Buddhist practices and just apply our secular sentiments in whatever we do, then that is the secular way. On the other hand, if we abide by the Buddhist practices, distance ourselves from secular sentiments, and cultivate pure karma, then that is the Buddha Way.

Because ordinary people are so affected by hatred and love, they are unable to be impartial. To be unbiased in handling affairs or disputes, familiarity with others and preconceptions of right or wrong must be put aside. Don’t be swayed by emotions. Then you will naturally be impartial and fair in whatever you do.

There are three sets of Bodhisattva Precepts. First, the restraining precepts, for elimination of all bad behavior. Second, the precepts for cultivating goodness, to accumulate all that is good. Third, the caring precepts, which guide and benefit all sentient beings. The Bodhisattva Precepts are inclusive of all of the Buddhadharma. If all of you can practice the Three Sets of Pure Precepts, you will naturally become a Bodhisattva.

Buddhism explains that all phenomena are impermanent. All things in the world go through formation, existence, deterioration, and extinction. Human beings go through birth, aging, sickness and death, and our thoughts go through the stages of arising, dwelling, changing and extinguishing. These are all impermanent.

Watching flowers blossom and wilt, you will be able to see the impermanence of phenomena, all of which go through creation and destruction. You will unfold your wisdom or you may become enlightened, re-identifying with your true nature. For example, there were those who heard the Dharma when Shakyamuni Buddha was on earth, and who followed his teaching of the Twelve-Links of Dependent Origination—they are called cause-awakened ones. Then there are those who are born into a world with no Buddha or Dharma to listen to. But through observation of impermanence, and of the creation and destruction of all phenomena, they become enlightened. These self-awakened ones have unimaginable roots of virtue from previous lives.

As long as we chant the Buddha’s name, there will be a lotus flower for us in the Water of Eight Meritorious Virtues. At the time of our death, Amitabha Buddha, Guan Yin Bodhisattva, and Mahastamaprapta Bodhisattva will come with our lotus flower and guide us to the Pure Land.
Everything is impermanent, including karmic hindrances. They will not last forever and can change at any moment. They arise due to causes and conditions, and will cease due to causes and conditions as well. How can we eliminate our karmic obstacles? The way to do so is to constantly be mindful of Amitabha Buddha. By sincerely chanting the name of Amitabha Buddha just once, we can eliminate our most severe offenses that have kept us in the cycle of birth and death for over eight billion kalpas. From this we can see how great is the merit of chanting the Buddha’s name!
