During the time of cultivation, upon hearing the Great Compassion Mantra from Thousand Light King Dwelling Stillness Buddha, Guan Yin Bodhisattva advanced from the first stage to the eighth stage of Bodhisattvahood. How powerful the merits of the Mantra are! Guan Yin Bodhisattva vowed, “If sentient beings uphold this Great Compassion Mantra, all of their wishes will be fulfilled.”

The Five Precepts are like a golden chain that guard the body and mind. Use them to prevent the body from committing acts of killing, stealing, and sexual misconduct, and stop the mouth from engaging in two-tongued speech, harsh speech, false speech, and frivolous speech. This is the essence of the Five Precepts.

To become a Buddha, we need to cultivate the Four All-Embracing Virtues and Six Paramitas. To be reborn as a human, we need to uphold the Five Precepts. To be born in the heavenly realms, we also need to follow and cultivate the Path of Three Virtuous Thoughts. We will fall into the Three Lower Realms if we break the precepts as a human.

We chant the name of Amitabha Buddha to become Amitabha Buddha—the mind is Buddha. We chant the name of Guan Yin Bodhisattva to become Guan Yin Bodhisattva—our mind is Guan Yin. This is not being arrogant or unrealistic. Our original, inherent nature is the same as that of the Buddhas. Do not give up on this nature; it is too precious to surrender.

Everyone has taken the Five Precepts, which are like the foundation to a high-rise building, and the base of a wall in a mansion. Now that you have taken the Five Precepts, it is as if the base of the wall has been laid down. Upon this foundation, in the future you can work on building skyscrapers, jeweled pagodas—a seven-story jeweled pagoda, 81-story jeweled pagoda, 108-story jeweled pagoda, 84,000 countless jeweled pagodas. I hope everyone will make a great resolve!
