We know that certain deeds should not be done, but we go ahead and do them anyway due to negative karma. We must chant Guan Yin Bodhisattva’s name more diligently and pray to her for help in eradicating our ignorance and in uncovering our wisdom. When we have wisdom, we will do good deeds, no longer creating bad karma.

There is a saying, “Husband and wife are like two birds in a forest. They go their separate ways when their last day comes.” So where will they go? People who do not practice Buddhadharma will be trapped in the Six Paths and will travel back and forth on these paths ceaselessly according to their karma. They might even fly into the hells of sword mountains and blade trees. As a matter of fact, we are all “birds in the same forest.” Do not wait till the time comes. We should always make haste and be prepared for death.

Coming to take the precepts is coming to repent and reform. Repent for the negative karma created in the past, and cultivate blessings and wisdom of the future. Self-cultivate and guide others, so that the world will be at peace, and finally, everyone will realize Buddhahood.

Do not gossip about others’ rights and wrongs. Rather, know what is right and wrong, and distinguish between what is pure and what is defiled. If you keep these ideas in mind, then you are a person who cultivates the Way.

The meritorious virtues of the precepts will be with you at all times. After taking the precepts, even if you encounter adverse conditions and violate them, these meritorious virtues will always be there.

The top priority in Buddhism is upholding precepts, which are like the law. Buddhist precepts require us to eradicate greed and anger from our actions and thoughts.

To be born in this world means that you upheld the Five Precepts. To be born in the heavens requires that your mind is virtuous as well. This is stated in the Precept sutras. Now that you have returned to the monastery, you are practicing toward the realms of the Four Sages. Stand firm on this path!
