This day is already done, our lives are that much less. We are like fish in the shrinking pond.
What joy is there in this?

The five desires (wealth, lust, fame, food, and sleep) are like brine – the more you drink the thirstier you become. Our greed is as deep as the ocean; you can never get to the bottom of it. Discontent is a kind of suffering. Happiness can only be found by minimizing your worldly desires, by being content with what you have.

As a Buddhist, instead of being jealous, you should rejoice in and support other people’s good deeds. This way, you will build on your blessings and wisdom, and let go of secular suffering and affliction. With the intention of establishing harmony, you should stop thinking that you are right and other people are wrong, and instead help other people in their good deeds. Never obstruct people from doing good, as it is detrimental to your blessings.

Tiny animals endure great sufferings. If we give to them with compassion, the act won’t make us any poorer. Nevertheless, the Law of Cause and Effect is inconceivable. With a mind of compassion and willingness to give, you will naturally be rich and enjoy peace and happiness. Otherwise, will you be happy just by earning money? No. Not only will you be unhappy, but the money will bring you endless suffering.

Everything is created by the mind. Secular beings are made from our secular attachments. Buddhas are made from the mind of compassion. Through compassion, they cultivate the Four All-Embracing Virtues and the Six Paramitas.

Indeed, everyone is busy with their lives. Good people are busy with wholesome endeavors; bad people are busy with unwholesome activities. All rewards or retributions are brought about by our own doing, so we should pay attentions to our actions!

To achieve the Buddha Path and escape from suffering, there are two phrases in Buddhism you must understand: “End all secular feelings; bury all saintly views” and “Slay the demons and Buddhas as they approach.” Whenever you cultivate virtue, you should have no thought of “self” or “other.” If you hold on to the notion of self and other, you will be unable to attain Anuttara Samyak-Sambodhi.

Even if the home that Buddhist practitioners live in is just a temporary residence, you have to rely on it during your time in this world. So, regulate your family by following secular rules and living by Buddhist virtues. Go on to influence your neighbors, society, the country, and the entire world. Eventually, everyone will return to our original home of the Western Pure Land. This is the true value of life, and you will not have lived your lives in vain.
