The Five Buddhist Precepts prohibit: killing, stealing, sexual misconduct, false speech, and intoxication. They compare to the five worldly Confucian virtues – benevolence, integrity, propriety, trustworthiness and wisdom. Not killing demonstrates benevolence; not stealing demonstrates integrity; no sexual misconduct demonstrates propriety; no false speech demonstrates trustworthiness; no intoxication demonstrates wisdom.

What is the reason behind the precept against eating plants such as onion and garlic?
Onion and garlic are among the Five Pungent Plants. When eaten raw, they make us get angry easily. When eaten cooked, onion and garlic act as aphrodisiacs, arousing sexual desire. Moreover, the bad breath resulting from eating these plants drives away good deities. Evil deities love the smell and will come to lick your mouth!

How does the Buddhadharma teach us to improve our actions and speech? Cultivation is not that difficult; everyone can do it. It all depends on our willingness to practice. If we are willing to put in the effort, we will definitely be able to do it. Not only that, we will also do it well. How do we do it well? We must practice the Five Virtues: virtues of benevolence, integrity, propriety, wisdom, and trustworthiness. In Buddhism, we call them the Five Precepts: no killing, no stealing, no sexual misconduct, no lying, and no use of intoxicants.
