When we recite the Flower Adornment sutra, it is most important that we expand the capacity of our minds. Let go of the notions of ‘me and mine’. Open up our minds to be in complete harmony with the minds of all Buddhas of the Ten Directions.

Be vegetarian to avoid incurring the debt of life
Beware that the Chinese character for ‘meat’ contains two ‘human’ characters stacked on top of each other. You might be eating an animal now, but you must endure the consequences in the future. If you don’t eat them, you will not have created this negative cause. You do not need to repay the debt if you don’t incur it.

The sixth Paramita is Prajna. Prajna has no physical shape or form and cannot be touched or seen. This is the essence of True Nature. Even though it cannot be seen or touched, it still exists. The first five of the Six Paramitas are at the phenomenal level, while the last one is at the noumenal level.

Patriarch Yin Kuang believes that understanding one’s True Nature only takes you one step toward enlightenment. The ability to perceive one’s True Nature means you truly understand it. However, you still have to practice the Way to attain any fruition. If you practice in accordance with your True Nature, you will attain enlightenment. As the saying goes: “Cultivation reveals one’s True Nature, but true cultivation depends on a pure mind.” This is the only way to attain the Dharma of Prajna.

True Nature manifests as human nature in human beings, while it is the Buddha Nature in Buddhas. Both the human nature and the Buddha Nature are of the same essence, which is the True Nature, also known as “True Thusness.” “True” means it is unchanging, and “Thusness” means it manifests according to conditions. What is true is the truth about the Law of Cause and Effect, which not only governs the secular realm but also the supra-mundane. In fact, the Law of Cause and Effect works throughout the Ten Dharma Realms. It is because the True Nature is empty that we see the Law of Cause and Effect at work in all phenomena.
