The Buddhadharma says, “Everything is created by the mind.” Both good and negative karma originate from your mind. Consequently, it is you who must overcome the karma of illness. It is just like battling with your enemy; whoever is stronger will win. If your mind is weaker, then your enemy will defeat you. If the power of your mind is stronger, then you can defeat your enemy and eradicate your negative karma.

It is stated in the Earth Store Sutra, “The power of karma is extremely great. It rivals Mount Sumeru in its heights. It surpasses the great oceans in its depths. It obstructs the path leading to sagehood.” If we are completely pure in our cultivation of virtuous karma, it can also obstruct our negative karma, so that we are unsuccessful in unwholesome endeavors. Even if bad people come to find us, we will not engage in anything unwholesome.

A single cause requires the help of many conditions in order for its effects to come to fruition. When the time comes and all the necessary conditions are present, there will certainly be an effect. If the time has yet to come, there might not be an effect.
