Being wealthy is the fruition; giving is the cause. If you don’t practice giving, how can you become wealthy? To practice giving doesn’t mean you have to give away one million or ten million; you can start by giving, say, a dollar. The great blessing of wealth comes from the accumulation of giving tiny amounts bit by bit, just like the water in the ocean is sourced from numerous rivers and streams.

Why do some people suffer from poverty?
Their poverty results from not practicing giving in previous lives. In order to turn poverty into happiness, peacefulness, and blessings, we must give despite being poor. Otherwise, we will be even more impoverished in our next life. The rich practiced the act of giving in their previous lives; however, if they do not continue, there will be no blessings for them in their next life. So, both the rich and the poor must practice giving.

Those with virtuous roots can accept the teaching even though they do not understand it. They believe that the Buddha speaks the truth and only the truth. They believe in and practice what the Buddha teaches. Even though they are still unclear about some principles, they practice them with confidence and conviction. Between these two types of people, we should learn from the ones with virtuous roots and follow their example.
