Help animals and deities take refuge in the Three Treasures
As Buddhists, when we see animals and livestock such as cows and horses, we should help them take refuge in the Three Treasures: “Take refuge in the Buddha, take refuge in the Dharma, and take refuge in the Sangha!” Doing so plants the seed of Buddhahood in them. This is the giving of Dharma, which generates great virtues. When you see land guardian deities, you can also say, “Land guardian! Secular blessings are limited. Chant the Buddha’s name diligently to seek rebirth in the Western Pure Land!” This is what you can say to town guardians and any other deities. This is part of our duty as Buddhists to guide sentient beings.
