Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic at the end of last year, people’s lives have been upended, and the catastrophic impact felt across the globe continues today. Even developed countries such as Canada have had to deal with shortages of medical supplies and other challenges. When Lingyen Mountain Temple (Canada) became aware of Richmond Hospital’s urgent need for medical equipment to treat COVID-19 patients, a special fundraising project called Lamp of Hope was launched. The temple has been collecting donations since the Bathing the Buddha Ceremony in April 2020, and the response has been great, both locally and internationally. Although the temple closed its doors in mid-February and stopped hosting religious assemblies, local residents and people from Taiwan, China, and the United States contributed to the cause and raised a total of $41,080 CAD, all of which was donated to the Richmond Hospital as a way to give back to the community.
