Great Master Zhi Zhe of the Tientai School emphasized the need to engage in repentance before beginning our Buddhist practice. Only by repenting for the karma we have created with our bodies, mouths and minds, will we be able to make steady progress in our practice. The same is said in the Flower Adornment School. Samantabhadra Bodhisattva said, how substantial are our karmic obstacles in terms of physical form? All of empty space would not be able to contain them! In appearance, they are created by our bodies, mouths, and minds; but where do they originate from? They originate from the mind. Offenses arise from the mind, yet the mind is used to repent. Without using the mind to repent, how can we repent for the fundamental elements of our offenses? The principles behind the emphasis that is placed on repentance of karmic obstacles, by both the Flower Adornment and Tientai Schools, are identical. Greatly virtuous practitioners of future generations created this Flower Adornment Repentance Ritual based on the main texts of the Flower Adornment and Tientai Schools, thereby incorporating the unique qualities of both. The Flower Adornment Repentance Ritual consists mainly of reciting the Chapter of the Practices and Vows of Samantabhadra Bodhisattva, in which the profound meaning of The Flower Adornment Sutra is found. In addition, the ten great vows of Samantabhadra Bodhisattva are put into practice by reverently prostrating to the Buddhas, and paying homage to the Sea Vast Flower Adornment Assembly of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. We will also learn from the Youth Good Wealth by chanting the 42 syllables of the Flower Adornment Syllabary. Each syllable guides sentient beings into the Dharma Realm, into Prajna wisdom, and back to their true nature. We dedicate the merits toward all sentient beings returning to the Pure Land Dharma method, and to all those in the eight difficult circumstances and the Three Lower Realms to enter the sea of Amitabha Buddha’s great vows.
