For the sake of benefiting sentient beings, I put aside my own practice of Buddha Recitation, but I am still being mindful of the Buddhas. Being mindful of sentient beings is being mindful of Buddhas of the future

An introduction to the Spring Auspicious Blessings Prayer Service

During the first three days of the lunar new year, the temple will hold the Spring Auspicious Blessings Prayer Service. The service will consist of recitation of the Sutra of Auspiciousness and the Universal Gateway Chapter, and chanting of the Buddha’s name. Every morning there will be a ceremony of Six Offerings, during which the temple’s Sangha assembly will respectfully present offering items on behalf of the benefactors. The names of the benefactors will be announced during the Dedication of Merits before the Buddha. At the beginning of the year, we invite you to personally participate in the service at the temple or online, and pray that our karmic obstacles will be removed, our wisdom will unfold, and our blessings and wisdom will grow.

          Spring Auspicious Blessings Prayer Service

Finally, I’m back to my Buddhist home

Along with British Columbia’s Restart Plan, starting October 9th, the temple has also been implementing a gradual reopening plan. After everyone’s earnest anticipation, visitors, volunteers, Buddhist Youth, Buddhist Children and their parents can now return to the purity and adornment of the Lingyen monastery. Here, they can obtain blessings and wisdom, and pray for the protection of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas.

“I’m so happy to be back with this big family we call Lingyen Mountain Temple!”
“I’m so happy to see the Masters again!”
“I’m so happy to be practicing with everyone in the Buddha Hall again!”

Amidst the sounds of everyone’s cheeriness, Sunday mornings at Lingyen Mountain Temple have resumed their pre-pandemic liveliness. Starting in mid-November, Buddhist Youth and Buddhist Children started coming back to the temple for their respective programs. Under the compassionate guidance of the Masters, they have re-familiarized themselves with Buddhist etiquette and studied well. Those unable to return to the temple can continue to join the programs online. Despite the fact that the pandemic has yet to completely settle down, Volunteers and parents have expressed that, by coming back and see the Masters, pay homage to the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, and return to group cultivation in the Buddha Hall, they feel a sense of fulfilment and stability. They are truly grateful for the Masters’ compassionin this regard.

From Tuesdays to Sundays, the outsideof the Main Buddha Hall is open for visitors to offer incense from 9:30AM to 5:00PM. The Guan Yin Gazebo in the courtyard is open every Sunday for visitors to offer incense. Visitors so far have been cooperative in following safety precautions such as wearing masks, frequently sanitizing their hands, and maintaining proper social distancing.

Starting December 5th, the temple will increase the times available to make reservations to participate in the in-person group practice sessions. The Sunday session will now start from 8:30AM and end at 11:30AM. During Dharma Services, the afternoon session from 1:30PM to 4:30PM and the evening session from 6:30PM to 9:30PM will also be available. The number of participants allowed in the Main Buddha Hall will be limited, so please call the temple to make a reservation if you wish to attend. Reservations will be granted on a first-come, first-served basis.

The Benefits of Reciting the Sutra of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva

The Great Vow Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva is one of the four major Bodhisattvas. His compassionate vow profoundly affects not only the living, but also the departed. All merits accrued from reciting the sutras will be transferred to our living relatives, to eradicate their karmic obst ructions and increase their virtuous roots, and to our deceased relatives, to free them from suffering and to help them attain bliss, and to promote their rebirth in the Western Pure Land.

ㆍWe will also dedicate the merits to the prompt elimination of the pandemic. May people’s minds be at ease, and the world be at peace.

lf Bhikshus, Bhikshunis, kings, princes, ministers, officials, or any citizens wish to practice filial compassion, they should make meal offerings of a hundred flavors on behalf of their parents in this life, and parents of their previous seven lives, to the Sangha of the Ten Directions on the last day of the Summer Retreat, also known as the Buddha’s Joyful Day (the 15th day of the seventh lunar month). They should pray that their living parents enjoy a long life free of illness and suffering, and their deceased parents be free from the realm of hungry ghosts, and enjoy endless blessings in the human and heavenly realms. Buddhist disciples who wish to practice filial piety should be mindful of their parents in every moment, and make offerings to their parents of their past seven lives. Every year on the 15th day of the seventh lunar month, they should be compassionately mindful of their parents in this life and their past seven lives, and make offerings to the Buddha and Sangha on their behalf, as a way of repaying their love and kindness in raising them. All Buddhist disciples should practice accordingly.
